Really nice insights! I also feel very strongly that a lot these learning are easily portable across industries. For instance, retail banks can use a lot of these concepts of exclusivity/ scarcity and ROS to improve loyalty among their affluent customer segments.

Sujay
@SujaySaha01

Hi Margaret,

Just came across your article and wanted to personally thank you for mentioning us, Revo Payments, within your analysis. Unfortunately, I didn't actually meet you at the symposium but hopefully, there is always next year. I'd love to keep in contact with you, if you have any questions or perhaps know of any upcoming conferences you think I should attend, that would be great. Thanks again and I wish you a stellar 2013. You can always reach me at jcorbera@revopayments.com.

Best Regards,

Joe Corbera

Assuming reliability and security, it would seem to be a convenient thing in terms of giving a family flexibility to disburse independently and still provide kids with a payment option, admission access and a room key. Preference might be to limit youngsters' spending via a "stored value" option instead of tying back to parents' credit card.

Disney has been testing the concept for awhile. Appears they are trying to overcome the "branded" point that Duane made previously by providing nearly limitless options to personalize and keep as a souvenir. There is a page on the DizFantatic website written by Michael DiMare that gives an insider's view on the process, including photos of the prototypes and a link to Disney's FCC application for anyone who is interested.

http://dizfanatic.com/DizTech012.aspx

If BankPlus incurred losses for years writing small loans at 5% APR, then maybe payday lenders aren't the predatory gougers they're hyped up to be. Like anything, it's all about scale, and small loans are expensive. The only way BankPlus turned it around was by steering their borrowers into checking and savings accounts, products which payday lenders can not offer under current regulatory regimes.

Dear Karen, hope to see you soon again.

However, consider that when, in Italy, we talk about Mobile Payments, the common people says "as everybody do it already in US"!!

Where is the fault. Are the journalists too busy in creating something doesn't exist yet? I believe so. Don't know why.

But you must accept the point that the Starbucks experience and the similar are NOT payments but a way to put a Closed Loop Card on a smartphone. That's it. And this can be done only by large and powerful companies able to integrate a camera on their cash registers.

But it is a good beginning.

What I buy from you is the fact that the killer app won't be the Mobile Payment through the NFC. Too complicated and with no added value.

But be more optimistic about what can be just behind the corner!
When all the "New Economy" companies started just put some PDF brochure on a web page and where happy they were on Internet.
We have seen how "internet" in integrated in our life. Can we still call it "just internet"?

My advice is just to look at the NFC as the ADSL killer media for the Internet. The NFC is the way to put in contact the smartphones with the real world. Wait for new ideas and business model. And why we should expect those from the OTT.
Once upon a time, the OTT were: IBM, Microsoft, Nokia ....

In the UK (with my bank anyway) contactless cards require a PIN authentication over £20 transaction/daily ceiling.

Very useful for travel/lunch and normal daily payments. I hope its detractors look a little further into the future and see the benefits.

Thanks Karen, I agree with your assessment about EMV and NFC. These two things have been so overwhelmingly overhyped in the past couple years. Visa's Mandate means absolutely nothing. Merchants are already stuck with the risk and liability for taking credit cards and it's no surprise that VI/MC are still trying to shift liability on the merchants and acquirers. By them making this mandate they have done absolutely nothing but declare what already has been declared. This fear factor tactic from VI/MC has fallen to the sidelines just as in the classic "Crying wolf" story. VI/MC have no more clout in this area and must start reinvesting and taking back liability to appease their customers. VI/MC have to start acting like a company rather than an "authority".

Dear Karen: I believe your explanations were and are very helpful ! Keep it up! By the way your e-book was a great overview of this evolving markeplace. I read with interest Jenna Wortham's article "Fed Up With Banks"...NYTimes 1/9/2013. Since this marketplace seems addicted to fee income...it strikes me that "Simple" is going to ultimately take aim at the ever increasing fee structures "required" to support business models. It's just the beginning of the dinosaurs getting knocked off by the deluge of entrepeneurs armed with smart phones. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks RMW

This loan model initiative by BankPlus is a welcome addition to the plethora of financial choices available to consumers. We sincerely hope it helps drive down consumer payday loan rates and eliminates the few remaining "bad players" from the small dollar loan industry.

We've experimented with consumer literacy programs with mixed results. Typically, our borrowers preferred immediate access to the loan proceeds then failed to attend our educational programs.

We'll watch this program closely and learn. The future? Larger loans for longer terms with payments that include principal reduction; no balloon payments. Jer - Trihouse (100% biased.)
