Amazon’s First East Coast Bookstore Rumored To Be Opening In New York

The rumors are swirling that Amazon has found a location for its third brick-and-mortar bookstore, and that the next instantiation will be on the East Coast.

Specifically, according to reports in the New York Post, Amazon will soon be trying to take Manhattan with a brick-and-mortar book store and cafe. The store is allegedly going to be in Hudson yards, a massive mixed-use building development that will feature retail, commercial and residential space.

“I don’t know if the final lease was signed yet, but I know the deal is happening,” one source told The Post. “There’s no way that deal is dying.”

If that description turns out to be accurate, the Hudson Yard location would be set to open in 2018 or early 2019 when the rest of the project is set to be ready for the public. It would be Amazon’s first East Coast store following an opening in its Seattle backyard.

Amazon would not confirm nor deny the Hudson Yard question when asked by The Post, but did confirm that a second retail store is slated for San Diego. And if Sandeep Mathrani, the chief executive of mall operator General Growth Properties, was being accurate during an earnings call earlier this year, Amazon is planning to open hundreds of retail bookstores.

A New York physical location would also pair nicely with the recent news that Amazon has scored a $30 million contract to sell e-books to the NYC schools (the nation’s largest district). That contract comes with a $34.5 million option to extend for two more years.
