Kenya’s Mobile Transfers Increase Despite Drop In Mobile Penetration

The Communications Commission of Kenya reported that nearly one million unregistered SIM cards were deactivated between January and March 2013. This lead to a large drop in Kenya’s mobile subscriptions, reported HumanIpo.

The number of mobile subscribers fell from 30.7 million to 29.8 million, and the CCK reported it deactivated over 2.4 million unregistered SIM cards, which also affected the mobile penetration. The country’s mobile penetration decreased from 78 percent to 75.8 percent during the same period.

Despite the blow to mobile penetration and subscriptions, the mobile money market in Kenya grew by 10.1 percent – a growth value of 23.2 million.
