Hungry? Grab A Smartphone

Do you have an appetite for both food and friendship? Want to meet over meat? Use an app to order some appetizers? Then GrubTonight may be for you.

Launched in Los Angeles in late January, the GrubTonight app connects users looking for companionship and chow, letting them agree to a meet-up, browse through three pre-fixed group dinners each night and pay for their meal, according to Reuters.

“People need efficient ways just to meet people. It’s a good social way to come together and you need to eat three times a day,” said Eddy Lu, CEO and co-founder of Grubwithus Inc., the parent company to GrubTonight. “We wanted to build a real-time spontaneous app where any night of the week you could go out and eat, because you need to eat anyway, and also have a social outing.”

According to Lu, most of the app’s users are between 20 and 35 years old, and the average meal costs around $20 for a shared appetizer, an entrée and a drink. According to SocialTech, Grubwithus is backed by GRP Partners and has raised $6.6 million in venture and seed funding to date.

With the iPhone-only mobile app is currently available just in the L.A. area, Grubwithus has an app that’s usable worldwide, and allows users to plan group dinners several days in advance. Although live in more than 50 cities, Lu cited San Francisco, New York and Chicago as the most popular sites.

Indeed, Lu said he first got the idea for Grubwithus when trying to find people to connect with in Chicago.

“When you go to dinner parties and meet friends of friends that’s when you really connect with people because you’re sitting beside them for an hour,” he said. “We thought that dinner was just such a good way to connect with people and build meaningful friendships.”
