Peapod Deploys Virtual Grocery Store at Chicago Subway Stations

Peapod has rolled out a new way to shop for groceries at CTA subway stations throughout Chicago. The online supermarket, which delivers groceries ordered online directly to consumers’ doors, has installed virtual shopping aisles on CTA station walls.

Consumers can download the PeapodMobile app for their smartphones to get access to the company’s official barcode scanner, which can then be used to add items to their shopping cart by scanning images on the wall.

The new rollout in Chicago looks a lot like a test run operated by Peapod in Philadelphia earlier this year. Peapod says 90 percent of the consumers who participated in its Philadelphia program came back to Peapod another time, according to Internet Retailer.

Another rollout this new project resembles is the virtual grocery store launched by Tesco in Korea last June. That system was based on QR codes, Geek.com notes.
