RIM Rebrands As BlackBerry, Looks To Regain Smartphone Market Share
Mobile giant Research In Motion (RIM) has officially rebranded as BlackBerry, taking the name of the product it’s been most closely associated with for the past decade.
The change in names came amidst a massive overhaul of the BlackBerry operating system, the release of two new BlackBerry phone and other features designed to help BlackBerry boost its 4.6 percent share of the smartphone market, according to the New York Times.
The BlackBerry Z10 phone is a new release that physically resembles the iPhone 5 and the BlackBerry Q10 will come with a physical keyboard. Both will be available in the U.S. in March and Canada on February 5.
“Today represents a new day in the history of BlackBerry,” said Thorsten Heins, CEO. “These BlackBerry 10 devices are absolutely the best typing experiences in the industry.”
BlackBerry has also revamped its operating system to support over 70,000 apps: an increasingly important function for smartphones.
