ROAM Evolves mPayments Platform With ROAMpay X4

If you want to be a real player in the mobile point of sale space, you better do more than simply accept card payments.

That’s why ROAM believes it has a “true mobile point of sale application” in its new platform, ROAMpay X4. Why does the payments company’s senior leadership view the X4 as a big part of its success moving forward? PYMNTS.com spoke with Ken Paull, CEO and Bill Pittman, Senior Vice President of Product Management to learn find out.

According to Paull, the ability to simply accept and process credit card payments from a mobile device does not make a product or platform a true mPOS solution. Instead, that platform must help merchants truly engage with their customers, and help such businesses gain a competitive edge over others in a crowded payments space.

“You know, most people in this industry with the mobile commerce application have pretty basic credit card processing capabilities. That’s how the market started. And what’s happening now is that’s morphing more into capabilities that you find on the traditional POS terminal, and extending into the actual cash register POS system,” Paull said.

“When I say some of the enhanced functionality, I mean things like inventory control and customization, things like sales tax calculations, the personalization of receipts, being able to put product images in description.

We’re seeing some of the basic credit card and payment functionality start to extend into full POS capability.”

Pittman agreed that Paull’s list of features covers much of why ROAM considers the ROAMpay X4 to be a “true mPOS application,” but added one unique capability that ROAM considers especially innovative.

“I think our biggest differentiator is probably offline credit card processing support,” Pittman said. “If you think about a mobile application, there’s times it’s going to lose connectivity. The ability to still be able to process that transaction when you’ve lost connectivity is important, and that’s something that we’ve built into this application.”
