New Twitter Commerce to Boost 2012 Election Donations

Dozens of U.S. House and Senate candidates have already signed on to receive donations from Chirpify, a new commerce platform that combines Twitter and PayPal.

Chirpify CEO Chris Teso has been developing this platform for 18 months, letting Twitter users buy products or donate to individuals or businesses through PayPal by simply tweeting conversational commands such as “buy”, “sell” or “donate”. (e.g., “@PYMNTS buy” “” it’s really that simple!). Still a bit confused?

New Twitter Commerce to Boost 2012 Election Donations

Dozens of U.S. House and Senate candidates have already signed on to receive donations from Chirpify, a new commerce platform that combines Twitter and PayPal.

Chirpify CEO Chris Teso has been developing this platform for 18 months, letting Twitter users buy products or donate to individuals or businesses through PayPal by simply tweeting conversational commands such as “buy”, “sell” or “donate”. (e.g., “@PYMNTS buy” — it’s really that simple!). Still a bit confused?

Here’s how it works: Both consumers and brands will need a Chirpify account that connects their Twitter and PayPal accounts. Then, businesses, consumers, non-profits, musicians, and now politicians, with a following on Twitter can start tweeting out items for sale through a simple dashboard. The tweet could say something like “Sale on X item. Reply ‘buy’ to purchase X.” When the user replies with a tweet saying they want to buy the product, the money will get deducted from their PayPal account. Chirpify will then fulfill the transaction if the user has connected their PayPal account to Chirpify using a quick OAuth permission. If the buyer doesn’t have a PayPal account, they are prompted to set one up and connect to Chirpify. With the new politician donation platform, users will simply have to tweet a participating politician with the word “donate”.

We talked to Teso about what a huge year this could be for his company. He dished on ecommerce inefficiencies, why Twitter is the perfect place for his product, and how the partnership of Chirpify and PayPal is a natural fit.
