U.S. consumers spent $2.3 billion on virtual goods in 2011, according to a study conducted by PlaySpan.

An estimated 25% of internet users between the ages of 13 and 54 bought a virtual good in 2011 — mostly men between the ages of 13 and 24, and mostly as an in-game purchase through a gaming system like the PlayStation or Xbox, the study says.
