Visa, PayPal Go Back and Forth on Security

A day after being accused of having “real issues” with its security, PayPal responded directly to comments levied by Visa’s head of product at a Goldman Sachs technology conference.

“With PayPal, your financial information can’t be lost or stolen from your wallet, your card or on your phone,” wrote Anuj Nayar, a PayPal spokesperson, in an email to the Wall Street Journal last week. “It’s safer in the PayPal digital cloud than in your pocket.”

A day prior, Visa executive Jim McCarthy was hardly subtle in his assessment of PayPal’s risk solutions. “I think there’s real issues around security,” he said.

PayPal began allowing users to pay for purchases directly from their PayPal accounts using a mobile phone number and a PIN in January. The pilot program has been rolled out to 51 Home Depot stores so far, the Journal writes.
