Walmart Hits the Road to Mobilize Customers

Walmart’s new marketing strategy for New York City is built around a vehicle that looks like an ice cream truck.

The mega-retailer has partnered with Proctor & Gamble to outfit a big white truck that will be driven through the streets of the Big Apple. The truck, which features QR codes on its sides and encourages passersby to check in with their smartphones, is the lead item in Walmart’s effort to attract NYC residents to its online and mobile shopping offerings, Online Media Daily reports.

Online and mobile are important channels for Walmart in New York, where the retailer doesn’t have many physical locations to attract customers.

“We truly believe that’s the future,” P&G spokesman Tim Marrin told OMD. “But people have yet to really adopt buying consumables online.”

The companies hope the marketing push — plus free delivery — helps coax a few consumers into trying a new way to shop.

The partners are also deploying a similar campaign in Chicago, OMD says — the same place where online grocer Peapod put up QR code-laden advertisements at subway station stops.
