Zappos Security Breach Compromises 24 Million Accounts

Popular online merchant Zappos.com has reported that a hacker may have gained access to the personal account information of over 24 million customers, according to a news report by WLWT.com.

While customers’ credit card and payment information was not stolen, personal addresses, phone numbers and the last four digits of credit cards may have been accessed. Zappos stated that the hacker gained access to its internal network via one of its Kentucky-based servers.

In an effort to minimize the effect the attack will have on its customers, Zappos is urging users to change their account passwords as soon as possible.

“We’ve spent over 12 years building our reputation, brand, and trust with our customers,” said Tony Hsieh, Zappos’ CEO, in an email. “It’s painful to see us take so many steps back due to a single incident. I suppose the one saving grace is that the database that stores our customers’ critical credit card and other payment data was not affected or accessed.”

Zappos is owned by Amazon.com Inc.
