Kenya’s Safaricom Delays M-Pesa Upgrade

Safaricom, a major telecom operator in Kenya, announced that upgrades to its popular mobile payments platform, M-Pesa, will be delayed until 2015, Reuters reported on November 6.

The system has proved popular with consumers, and has grown to processes approximately 250 transactions per second. However, the high volume is cause for frequent shutdowns and routine upgrades.

Bob Collymore, Safaricom’s chief executive, told the media outlet that the setback would not impede M-Pesa’s operational stability.
