YouTube Unveils Subscription Service Amid Competition

YouTube announced in a blog post yesterday that it is launching a pilot program that offers paid channels to subscribers at fees starting as low as $0.99 per month. Subscribers will be able to choose from 30 channels that can be accessed from a range of devices, including tablets, TVs, phones and computers. Each channel will also offer a 14-day free trial for those who can’t quite commit, the company says.

“We’ll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners. And as new channels appear, we’ll be making sure you can discover them, just as we’ve been helping you find and subscribe to all the channels you love across YouTube,” the company said in the post.

The move comes days after a similar service, Patreon, launched with the aim of enticing creatives away from YouTube with optional payment for content.
