American Express Launches HCE Project

Strengthening its hold over Croatian payments industry, American Express has partnered with the country’s second largest bank “Privendna Banka Zagreb” to provide an NFC payment service using host card emulation (HCE) technology.

With the service, the cardholders would register with PBZ and download an app, which would let them enroll a payment card using two verficiation codes provided by PBZ. Upon verification, the customers can make mobile payments at any point-of-sale terminals that accept contactless payments, according to PBZ’s website.

Head of Retail Adriana Saitta of Italy based Intesa Sanpaolo’s banking group, the mother company of PBZ bank, said that the launch in Croatia would help drive broader adoption of mobile payments across the region.

“The PBZ mobile NFC payment services will be enabled initially on smartphone devices,” Intesa Sanpaolo explained. “With HCE, PBZ will be able to offer mobile NFC payment services to all of its cardholders in Croatia, regardless of the mobile network operator, and on multiple payment networks.”

The pilot project in Croatia would help Intensa Sanpaolo to help launch HCE solutions with other affiliated banks, thereby, quickly delivering NFC solutions for different payment products, PBZ’s website said.
