Google I/O Conference: Android Hits 1 Billion Active Monthly Users

During the Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco June 25, Google reported that it’s Android operating system now has 1 billion active monthly users. It had topped 1 billion device activations in September.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s Android and Chrome head, also noted that Android phones are checked 100 billion times each day. Moreover, installations of Android tablet apps are up 236 percent year over year. Pichai said Google has 62 percent share of the tablet market, up from 46 percent last year.

That growth plus the dominance of Android smartphones is helping boost Chrome mobile, which now has 300 million active daily users, Pichai’s said, adding later that Google’s Play Store app installations are up 236 percent from a year ago. Moreover, Google Play also can support direct carrier billing, he said.

Google Play now has more than 100 million users, Ellie Powers, Play’s product manager, said at the event. “”Google Play games is now the fastest growing mobile game network of all time,” she said.

Like Apple, Google also see the benefits of supporting health care apps. The company announced Google Fit, which is designed to better track health data from multiple trackers and sensors. Partners it named in the announcement included Nike, Withings, RunKeeper and Adidas.

Google said it has paid $5 billion to developers since last year’s I/O conference, 2.5 times that payout growth year over year.
