How Apple Pay Will Work With the New iPads

When Apple made the iPad announcement yesterday at the Cupertino based event, Apple made sure to note that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were the only devices able to utilize Apple Pay within retail stores, but not users obtaining the iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3.

Want to know why? It’s pretty simple actually. It’s because the NFC feature that powers Apple Pay in-stores isn’t currently available on the newest iPads. But there is good news! To anyone who does happen to purchase the one of the new iPads, they will be able to use Apple Pay online via in-app.

Despite the fact that Apple Pay in-store will not be accessible to iPad users, participating retailers will launch new apps that will support the Apple Pay service. So new iPad users can too also enjoy shopping in-app with a touch of a TouchID button.

Since the Apple event back in September, 500 new banks have signed on to commit to the Apple Pay service in addition to several other merchants and brick-and-mortar stores such as McDonald’s and Walgreens.

Apple and the participating issuers and networks have been emphasizing the ease and security of using Apple Pay given its reliance on tokenization and the Touch ID process. They are touting the fact that users can also enjoy the convenience of not having to update their credit card information if their card has either expired or reported stolen, since the enablement of the digital credential, that is device specific, can be managed by the token manger, either the network or the bank, depending.
