Is UK Retailer Tesco Ready To Put A Beacon On Its Customers?

British retailer Tesco reportedly is testing Apple’s iBeacon technology at one of its stores in an experiment with a store-specific app. However, reports Marketing Magazine, the company isn’t yet ready to use the technology to market directly to its customers.

Initially, Tesco is using the service to provide mobile-marketing messages to customers when they walk in the store to pick up preordered items. Company officials reportedly are concerned they could scare customers away if they receive via their phones deal offers on specific products when they walk past them in the aisles.

The goal is to send targeted messages to specific customers based on data the merchants has on them from past shopping experiences.

FIS Veep Troy Land recently had some interesting things to say about beacon technology, including some concerns, in a recent PYMNTS.com podcast interview.
