PayPal’s Mobile Payments Goes Dutch

Dutch consumers—and tourists visiting the Netherlands—can now pay with PayPal when they are out on the go a seized by a sudden desire to stop for pancakes.

PayPal has partnered with Rabobank Bank-backed MyOrder to allow PayPal users to preorder and purchase items prior to arrival at a restaurant, pay from their table and even cover their parking costs, all from the palm of their hand.

The app will even tell users what local business accept MyOrder and allow them to book reservations directly.

PayPal’s latest move to say “Ja” to real-world commerce in the Netherlands comes as one of many moves the company has recently made to transcend its current position as a dominant online payment method. The company wants to keep its online users, of course, but it has shown increasing interest in how people pay when they are making purchases away from their computer.

Last year $27 billion of the $180 billion in payments processed by PayPal came from a smart phone or tablet—at nearly a 99 percent uptick from the previous year.  PayPal has even moved to bring Amazon OS users into the fold—they release an app for the Fire phone last week.
