Rules Governing Military Travel Management Changing

The Joint Travel Regulations, which control how active duty troops are processed and to handle permanent-change-of-station moves and how they are reimbursed for temporary duty assignments is undergoing an overhaul.

Army uniformed travelers are instructed to use their  government travel credit cards for PCS moves. Similar to an Air Force  policy already in place, the Marine Corps is preparing to implement its own administrative message regarding use of the government travel card for permanent changes of station.

The change applies to both uniformed and civilian personnel in each of the services, Johnson said.

“Ultimately, we want to extend this initiative to all federal civilians and uniformed members, because at the end of the day, we believe it’s the right thing for our cardholders,” he said.

By using the government travel card, movers no longer are forced to pay out of pocket for moving expenses.

“We want to make sure that people still have it within their budget to continue to travel,” a government representative noted, “but we’ve got to travel smarter, more efficiently and try to return money back to the Department of Defense.”
