Why Park Your Car At The Airport When You Can Lease It?

While Uber and other “ride-sharing” startups are facing increasing regulatory issues, a company called FlightCar just scored $13.5 million to allow people to share their rides — specifically, their cars — instead of parking them at the airport, according to VentureBeat.

The startup, which was launched in February 2013, lets its 30,000 members list their cars online before flying out of airports in San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles. On travel day they pull into a FlightCar parking lot near the airport and are then taken to their gate by a town car service.

Pre-screened renters, who are also FlightCar members, pay between $19 and $39 per day, depending on length of rental and size of car, and also pay 45 cents per mile after the first 100 miles per day. Car owners get a share of the mileage fees, and their cars are cleaned and washed inside and out, with no parking fee.

The $13.5 million Series A round that closed on Wednesday will be used to expand the service to Seattle and other airports. The round was led by GGV Capital and included current investors SoftBank Capital, General Catalyst Partners and First Round Capital, along with Comcast Ventures, Great Oaks Venture Capital and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
