eBay is today launching its Thanksgiving dinner inspired “Wish Bigger Wishbone” campaign, which will allow its customers to pick between deals paired against each other — much like breaking the turkey wishbone on Thanksgiving.
“eBay’s Wish Bigger Wishbone digital shopping event puts a new, crowd-sourced spin on getting in-demand holiday gifts. We wanted shoppers to be able to skip the chaos of Black Friday, and have earlier access to the deals they are wishing for the most,” Hal Lawton, Senior Vice President and Head of North America for eBay told Forbes.
The potential deals, eBay says, will be made available for up to 70 percent off MSRP on new and in-demand gifts, which would range from fashion, tech, accessories and toys to home appliances, and would be available between 4 p.m ET to 10 p.m ET.
At the end of each hour, the deal with the most votes will “break open” for sales and will be available until stock lasts. eBay said it’s also allowing its customers to vote for their deal of choice using Facebook and Twitter.
eBay’s move to let its customers pick deals is one of the many attempts by retailers to better monetize the Black Friday shopping buzz this year. Last week, eBay’s top competitor, Amazon, announced plans to allow its Prime members early access to Black Friday deals, thereby not just stirring up demand for its Prime membership, but also sales of products on its platform.
