In the ongoing battle of the operating systems, Apple is making some headway, at least in Europe, according to a new report.
As reported by VentureBeat on Wednesday (Sept. 2), the report from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says that, for the three months that ended in July, European smartphone buyers in the region’s five biggest markets left their Android-powered devices to opt for iPhones.
Within those five markets, the research showed, there is at least some saturation, as the number of smartphones sold to consumers who could be considered first-time buyers slipped to 25 percent from 29 percent in the year-ago period. In terms of total sales, more than a quarter of smartphone buyers, or 27 percent, during those three months, switched from Android to iOS. In contrast, only 9 percent of Android users made the switch to iOS in the U.S.

As the website noted, as the saturation in Europe heats up, that means that the competition is heating up for peoples’ next smartphone buy, and that may signal a shift to Apple over the competition.
The research firm said that an upcoming event — the debut of Apple’s new iPhones — could make things even tougher on Android, as there will likely be attendant drops in pricing on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which have been popular and could see increased sales on those price drops.
Other studies released recently show that there is some loyalty among Android users in the United States. As reported earlier this summer, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners tracked users over the past two years and found that 82 percent of Android users kept that system when they went to purchase a new device. That was slightly above the 78 percent rate recorded for the Apple operating system.
