Handpick Delivers ‘Smart Groceries’ To Mobile

Ingredient recommendation engine and food discovery app Handpick announced the launch of its “Smart Groceries” service yesterday (July 30).

The service, which is available through Handpick’s mobile app, aims to bring affordable meals to the masses by offering consumers the ability to shop, cook and eat healthy meals while keeping food spending to a minimum. Smart Groceries is targeting a wider audience on a cross-income scale.

“We view our meal solutions as ‘smart’ because our approach is the more affordable, sustainable way to cook, in contrast to competitors. Our recipes are intelligently selected, not by chef consultants or at a round-table, but using our market-leading data insights on social foods, ingredients trending and the sentiments around them. The secret sauce behind Handpick’s Smart Groceries is that they’re designed to use up any perishable food by week’s end, leaving zero food waste. Moreover, customers can use our mobile app incase they change their minds and want to prepare something else with ingredients delivered in their food bundle,” Payman Nejati, Handpick’s co-founder and CEO, said in a company release. “Our long-term mission with Smart Groceries is to provide the most affordable groceries that save consumers time and money while minimizing food waste.”

Select groceries from Handpick are sourced from local supermarkets and all grocery bundles are delivered with three step-by-step illustrated recipes to make at least two servings.

Handpick said Smart Groceries offers benefits to users, including:

  • Shoppers Pay Less – the company claims to offer its food bundles for 30 to 60 percent less than other meal kit delivery vendors, with costs starting at $40 (including shipping and handling)
  • Flexibility – the Smart Groceries service is available without a subscription and allows customers to customize their grocery bundles based on diet and food restrictions
  • Mobile-Enabled – through Handpick’s mobile offering, Smart Groceries users have access to the company’s searchable food database, user-generated posts and more than 250 million recipes

“We believe our Smart Groceries actually helps shoppers stay on budget because the service picks, packs, and delivers groceries to one’s doorstep, eliminating typical impulse purchases that drive the final receipt higher than what it was supposed to be,” Nejati explained.
