It’s only been a few brief months since Google and MasterCard first announced the partnership with some of the biggest names in the industry on Google Wallet — the technology that enables customers to instantly tap, pay and save with a NFC (near field communications) enabled phone at PayPass terminals nationwide. Well, what do you know? It’s finally here!
If you’re lucky enough to have a Sprint Nexus S 4G, keep an eye out for an over-the-air update which will enable the Google Wallet app. Simply install the app and the next time you spot one of the more than 300,000 PayPass locations around the globe, you’ll be ready to go! As a bonus, Google is even adding $10 to the Google Prepaid MasterCard for being early to check things out!
I first experienced NFC-based mobile payments a few years ago in Japan, and it was one of the few times I can remember feeling like the rest of the world was really missing out. It was a technology that seemed so simple, yet could be so transformative to our day to day lives. This Google Wallet first release is a great reminder of what an exciting moment it is for the payments world, especially now that people are finally starting to catch a glimpse of all the amazing things you can do when it’s possible to leave your wallet in your pocket (or at home).
I’m really excited about taking another step closer to a future where using your portable device to instantly pay is as easy, convenient, and commonplace as making a call from anywhere in the world. MasterCard recently demo’d the Google Wallet at their Media Day (check the video out) but what do you think about the Google Wallet? Is this the push the mobile payments industry needs?
