Joseph Schlatter, a student at Boston University, has won a $20,000 scholarship from CollegeNET.com, the social network through which people create topics, write or video-cam about them, and then vote to determine who will win scholarship money every week. The winnings were the culmination of a 10-week grand prize tournament, which also awarded second- and third-prize scholarships.
Grand Prize winner Joseph Schlatter, who hails from Oregon, has won a total of $23,692 in scholarship money since he began competing in CollegeNET.com’s weekly competitions in July 2012.
“This is fantastic!” Joseph said. “My parents will be so happy they don't have to cosign another loan!”
Second prize winner Jennifer Cork, who attends Eastern Washington University, won $7,000 for presenting forums on topics including “No child left behind and high stakes testing,” and “Can homosexuals ‛pray away the GAY’?” Third prize winner Tristan Bassingthwaighte, a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, won $3,000 for initiating forums including “Can you change your opinions?” and “Where does worth stem from?”
All three winners can elect to apply their scholarship money to their tuition and certain education costs, or direct the funds to their lending institution to help repay their student loans.
In addition to the financial benefits of competing on CollegeNET.com, Joseph also cited social aspects as another compelling reason to participate: “CollegeNET.com is like a liberal arts education,” he said. “You hear so many perspectives you wouldn't ordinarily hear, from people in all different majors.”
CollegeNET.com candidates earn points towards scholarship money by posting forums, commenting on other participants’ forums, and voting for participants whose forums they like. Candidates are eligible to win scholarships totaling up to $10,000 every week. Ten or more scholarships are awarded each week, in addition to a Rookie Prize for the top-point earner among new participants. Scholarship opportunities are available to anyone who is currently attending an accredited college or university or who is still carrying student loan debt.
With over $1,100,000 in scholarships awarded to date, CollegeNET.com marks its fifth year helping students and graduates pay for tuition costs and student loan repayment.
