Heal Raises Close To $27 Million To Expand House Call Doctors Service

Heal, the Santa Monica, CA startup that enables doctor house calls, has reportedly raised close to $27 million in additional funding.

According to a report, the proceeds from the latest round of fundraising will go to expand operations, which are currently available in several different markets in California. With Heal, a patient would use the app to summon a doctor to their house, and within two hours, the doctor arrives. (Who thought the days of house calls were long over?)

According to the report, Heal was born out of cofounders and husband-and-wife team Nick Desai and Renee Dua, who, after a visit to the emergency room with their young child, wondered why it wasn’t easy to get a doctor to visit their home. As a result, the two founded Heal in March 2105. The app makes it as easy to order a doctor to a customer’s home as it is to get food delivered. The service is aiming to address some of the problems in the country with the current health care system, including reducing the number of patients a doctor sees. According to the Desai, family doctors see roughly 40 patients a day, which doesn’t afford them the ability to spend much quality time with their patients. With the Heal app, doctors see about a dozen patients a day.

“Doctors are attracted to Heal for a very simple reason: They get to make the same money they make seeing 40 patients a day by seeing 12 patients a day,” Desai told Fortune.

The Heal app also dovetails with a movement in the U.S. in which people are using alternatives rather than visiting doctors to get help with their ailments. For instance, health care providers are turning to technology to visit patients in virtual settings via video chat.
