Big Brick-And-Mortars Double Down On Same-Day Delivery

As brick-and-mortar retailers continue to struggle to bring in consumers, a few are taking a page out of Amazon’s book and working instead to meet consumers where they live.

Literally. And quickly.

Macy’s, Best Buy and Kohl’s have all recently stepped up same-day delivery options that were in testing mode to full-scale operations in some locations.

Macy’s was the earliest to the table with same-day delivery, first moving toward it in 2014. However, of late, its expansion has been rapid, and it is now in 17 major metro markets.

Best Buy has expanded its same-day delivery pilot program that launched last fall in San Francisco to 13 U.S. markets. Best Buy has also recently added NYC, as well as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Kohl’s has expanded same-day delivery to Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and Washington, D.C./Baltimore markets.

All three major chains built their programs in partnership with Deliv, which uses an independent network of couriers to pick up merchandise from stores and deliver it to customers.

All could use a boost. Best Buy saw sales rise only 0.5 percent in 2015, while Kohl’s only saw 0.7 percent.
