Warren Truly Considering Senate Run, Say Senate Democrats

June 16, 2011

Senate Democrats assert Elizabeth Warren is genuinely weighing whether to challenge the Massachusetts GOP incumbent, Sen. Scott Brown, in next year’s elections, according to the National Journal.

The sites reports Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) dined Tuesday night with Warren, who is currently leading efforts to set up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“It was the second time Warren had dinner with Schumer, who has been making the case that Warren can mount a serious challenge to Brown, who Democrats argue has weakening numbers and is vulnerable to a well-funded challenger with President Obama on the ballot next year in a state where Democrats have a significant edge on the registration rolls,” reports the National Journal.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray was talking about to Warren when she said to reporters last month that “we expect to have a good, strong candidate within weeks,” for the Massachusetts Senate election, according to others in the party. The sources said, though, that a decision from Warren is not likely before the Senate’s July 4th break, which is the next opportunity President Obama would have to use a recess appointment to make Warren the official head of the CFPB.

“White House has signaled it is unlikely to make recess appointments during that break, and odds Warren will ever get the post appear to be falling amid GOP opposition to her appointment,” reports the National Journal. “Strategists in both parties also question Warren’s viability against Brown, who remains very popular. A former Harvard Law Professor, Warren is not from the state and has never run for an elected office.”

Democrats who have already thrown their hats in the Senate race include Newton Mayor Setti Warren, who previously worked as an aide for Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), as well as  City Year founder Alan Khazei, activist Bob Massie and state Rep. Tom Conroy.
