PayPal Gives Thanks For Black Friday

Black Friday wasn’t just a good day for PayPal in terms of mobile payments, it was the best day in company history.

If you’re looking for a company that illustrates the growing mobile shopping trend, look no further than eBay, the online commerce giant that’s release some eye-popping numbers in regards to Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales.

One fun stat: on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday, the most popular time for mobile purchasing was between noon and 1 p.m., PST. That means quality family time could be transitioning to quality mobile time, and merchants are sure to take note.

Thanksgiving Statistics

Thanksgiving mobile shopping took another leap forward in 2012, with eBay reporting a 133 percent increase in mobile volume transaction from 2011. PayPal saw an even larger percentage of growth, with a 173 percent increase in mobile volume transaction and a 164 percent jump in the number of global customers shopping through PayPal mobile.

Black Friday Statistics

As much success as eBay enjoyed on Thanksgiving, the following day was even better: namely the biggest mobile shopping day in PayPal’s history. PayPal’s mobile payment volume nearly doubled from 2011, rising a whopping 193 percent. eBay as a whole saw a 153 percent increase in mobile payment volume.

Mobile Buying Hotspots

On both Thanksgiving and Black Friday alike, Houston earned the distinction of the region from which most mobile PayPal orders were generated. Los Angeles and Chicago finished second and third, respectively, on Thanksgiving, while the two traded places on Black Friday. Miami came in fourth and New York in fifth on both shopping holidays.
