European Payment Processors Register Record Numbers Despite Crisis

European payment services providers have registered record numbers for transactions processed in 2012. Adyen the global payments solutions company, announced that the company achieved record growth in terms of revenue, transactions processed, mobile payments and new customer wins.

In 2012, Adyen processed more than $10 billion in payments transactions worldwide, an increase of 35% over 2011. Mobile payments on the Adyen platform increased 300% in 2012, representing 10.5% of total transactions – up from 3.5% at the end of 2011. This substantial growth in transactions was driven by a 55% increase in new customers worldwide and significant organic growth of existing customers.

Adyen’s success can also be explained by the processor’s offer of local payment methods. Just in 2012, the company added 27 new local payment methods, including Nordea, SEB and BankAxess (Northern Europe); Trustpay (Eastern Europe); Click and Buy and Ukash (Europe); Qiwi, Yandex and WebMoney (Russia) and Cashu (Middle East).

Belgian-based Ogone also recorded an increase in transaction processing, which grew by 41.3% in 2012. The Payment Service Provider processed a total of 137 million online transactions throughout 2012, representing 16.6 billion euros transferred over its platforms across 76 countries. A great proportion of those transactions came from eCommerce. With a worldwide presence featuring a strong pan-European focus, Ogone is now reinforcing its activity in the USA and in India, as well as prospecting new markets such as Asia.

The two payment processors show that, despite the widespread crisis in Europe, customers are actually increasing their spending.
