MPOS Tracker® December 4, 2013

December 4, 2013

This monthly report is designed to organize the mobile point of sale ecosystem, one that has emerged over the last several years as smartphones and tablets deliver new point of sale acceptance capabilities for all categories of merchants. This report provides an initial overview of those players who have entered this space, including a description of their capabilities, solution features and functions and customer and go to market priorities. This report organizes the ecosystem into two broad categories: those merchant-facing organizations who supply devices to merchants directly and those who “power” those players and supply them with the MPOS hardware, software, tools and services that helps merchant-facing organizations meet their customer needs.

The mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) market is in the midst of rapid expansion, and if the latest projections prove correct, what we’re seeing this November is just the beginning: Mobey Forum recently forecasted that mPOS will reach 46 percent market penetration by 2017, up from just 17 percent today.

What’s driving this growth? Our November 2013 report illustrates how big-name brands and speciality retailers are harnessesing mPOS for inventory management, linebusting, payments and more, a demand that is likely to continue as such solutions generate success. For example, Alex and Ani have used mPOS to boost sales 300 percent.

Due to successful use cases and market demand, it’s no surprise that more players entered the market in November. Our latest MPOS Pyramid features new names such as Move and Pay, POGO and Cardflight. In addition, we’ve updated ten players: ROAM, Anywhere Commerce, Clip, Infinite Peripherals, JUSP, NCR Silver, Payleven, Square, Spire/Thales and Vantiv.

However, just because there’s growth in a sector, that doesn’t mean all players in the space are likely to flourish. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from our November report is that the number of mPOS businesses is likely to diminish in 2014 as competition heats up and consumers demand more sophisticated design, features and functionality.

“There will have to be some consolidation as players that only provide dongles and card processing will be overtaken by those with card accepting capabilities as well as specific solutions that address a vertical market’s needs,” our report indicates. “These vertical markets won’t be large enough to support multiple players given thin margins and the relatively small size of many of these vertical markets.”

How will mPOS players look to differentiate their offerings in order to ensure they’re left standing when the dust settles? For more insight into mPOS’ growth, as well as our there takeaways for November, download a full copy of this month’s report here.

It is worth noting that this ecosystem is moving quickly and this report is by no means complete. Information about these players is available in varying degrees of completeness. Details about volumes and shipments – the information that everyone finds most valuable – is not publicly available. We plan to update this report on a monthly basis to include new entrants, and updates on the players profiled in the prior month’s report. We are also in the process of compiling and will report out aggregated information about shipments and volumes. We encourage you to contact us at mobilepos@pymnts.com if you would like to be included in this report and/or would like us to update your information as we have presented it.
