Burson Adds Senior Advisor to Strengthen Competition Team

Burson announced the appointment of Mathew Heim as Senior Advisor for Competition, Litigation and Regulatory, according to a statement released by the firm. In the new role, Heim will assist clients dealing with competition enforcement matters, heightened regulatory scrutiny, and public affairs challenges linked to litigation.

    Heim will collaborate with several of the firm’s practice groups, including Competition, Litigation and Regulatory; Technology; Energy & Industrials; and Corporate and Public Affairs teams across Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as other global markets, per a statement from the company. His work will focus on helping organizations manage legal and policy issues that intersect with reputation and public communications.

    According to a statement from Burson, Heim brings more than 20 years of experience working across the fields of law, public policy and strategic communications. His background includes senior roles in major technology companies as well as advisory work on regulatory and political risk issues in Europe.

    Before joining Burson, Heim served as Head of International Competition Policy at Amazon in Seattle. He also held the position of Vice President and Counsel at Qualcomm in Europe, according to a statement from the firm. Earlier in his career, he spent more than a decade advising clients across sectors on legal and political developments in Europe, including matters related to competition policy enforcement, litigation communications, crisis response and political risk.

    Heim also remains active in the international competition policy community. According to a statement, he serves as Senior Advisor to Business at OECD (BIAC)’s Competition Committee to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and acts as a Non-Governmental Advisor to the International Competition Network, a role for which he was nominated by the UK Competition and Markets Authority.

    In addition, Heim serves as Co-Chair of the International Chamber of Commerce Task Force on Competition Law and the Digital Economy, per a statement.

    Beyond his advisory roles, Heim contributes to academic and policy research. According to a statement, he is a non-resident Senior Fellow at the George Washington Competition & Innovation Lab, where his research focuses on governance issues related to competition policy. His research has appeared in publications including the Journal of European Competition Law and Practice, European Competition Law Review, Competition Policy International and Concurrences.
