EU/US: Delta, Virgin merger earns regulatory clearance

Both the European Commission and the US Department of Justice announced Thursday that a proposed deal between Delta and Virgin Atlantic airlines has been approved. The transaction, which sees Delta acquiring a 49 percent take in Virgin, has only the US Transportation Department to earn final clearance from necessary regulators. If fully approved, the airlines would expand their presence at London’s Heathrow Airport; according to reports, the deal would also strengthen Delta’s position against rival United Continental. The parties first announced the deal last December.
