According to the announcement, Syrjälä will transition from the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority, where she has spent nearly twenty years in various enforcement positions, most recently serving as Deputy Director General for Competition and as the long-standing Head of the Merger Control Unit. The firm highlighted that few professionals in Finland have dealt with as many high-profile and complex competition cases directly at the front line.

Her background covers a broad range of areas within the field, per the statement, including merger review, antitrust investigations, abuse of dominance matters, cartel enforcement and high-level administrative litigation. She is also noted for her technical understanding of economic principles and her strong relationships across Nordic and European regulatory bodies.

“I am genuinely excited to join Geradin Partners at this stage of my career. Moving from public enforcement to private practice is a major step—but also a natural one. I look forward to working closely with clients on their most demanding competition challenges and to contributing to the evolution of competition advisory in a rapidly changing regulatory and technological environment,” says Syrjälä.

Firm leaders emphasized the significance of the appointment. Damien Geradin, Founding Partner, stated: “Sanna is a truly exceptional figure in competition enforcement in the Nordics. Her combination of strategic judgment, procedural knowledge and economic insight is extremely rare. Her arrival marks a major milestone not only for our Helsinki office, but for our firm across Europe.”

Mikko Alkio, Founding Partner of the Helsinki office, added: “Sanna has been at the very core of Finland’s most significant merger and antitrust cases for close to twenty years. Her move into private practice substantially strengthens our ability to handle the most sensitive, high-stakes competition matters, both nationally and at EU level.”

Geradin Partners focuses on competition law, technology regulation and litigation and operates from seven offices in six different jurisdictions.
