OFT considers Jewson’s undertaking to divest 22 branches for Build Center acquisition

The Office of Fair Trading is considering Jewson’s undertaking to divest 22 local branches to allay competition concerns with its acquisition of Build Center. Jewson and Build Center are two of the country’s largest general builder’s merchants: in the U.K., Jewson has 510 merchants and Build Center has 149 branches.

    In examining the merger between the two companies, the OFT found competition concerns in 22 local areas in England, Wales, and Scotland because of insufficient competitors in those markets. On a national level, however, the OFT found no threat to competition.
