Germany wireless giant Deutsche Telekom and its operations in Slovakia are reportedly facing fines from the European Commission for abusing its market dominance, according to sources.
The sources said Tuesday that the Commission will fine the companies for squeezing out rivals from the market by requiring Slovakian competitors to pay excessive wholesale costs. The Commission said in 2012 that Slovak Telekom’s wholesale prices are troubling and don’t allow for rivals to make a profit.
According to one source, the Commission will issue the fines after the summer break, likely in September, though noted that it was possible the fines could be issued next month.
The sources said the Commission has not decided the size of the fine.
Deutsche Telekom holds a 51 percent stake in Slovak Telekom, according to reports. The company has been under the Commission’s radar for wholesale prices since 2010.
