This offering marks an expansion of the global partnership of Costco and DoorDash, which already spans Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland and Puerto Rico, according to the release.
Costco members in the U.S. can now order groceries, pantry staples, household essentials, electronics, seasonal merchandise and other items from Costco warehouses through DoorDash for same-day delivery, the release said.
Costco members can open the DoorDash app, search for Costco, select their local warehouse, shop, link an active Costco membership and complete their order. Consumers who are not yet members can follow a link to Costco.com, purchase a membership and return to DoorDash to link their new account, per the release.
Before this launch, Costco was one of the most-searched retailers not yet available on DoorDash, according to the release.
“By pairing Costco’s quality, value and selection with DoorDash’s reach and local delivery network, we’re giving members more flexibility in how they shop,” Mike Goldblatt, vice president of enterprise partnerships at DoorDash, said in the release.
With the addition of Costco, DoorDash now partners with eight of the 10 largest food retailers in North America, per the release.
PYMNTS reported in March 2022 that DoorDash, which had been primarily a restaurant aggregator, expanded into new grocery categories by adding the first wholesale club to its platform, BJ’s Wholesale Club.
In August, DoorDash said new verticals outside restaurants, including grocery and retail, are growing faster than the company’s core restaurant business and remain on track to turn gross profit positive by the end of the year. The company said that as customers who join through restaurant orders adopt grocery and retail orders over time, basket sizes increase.
PYMNTS reported Wednesday (Sept. 16) that Costco expanded its partnership with Uber Technologies to offer Costco delivery through Uber Eats in 47 states in the U.S. Costco tested that partnership in Texas, expanded it to 17 U.S. states and Canada during the quarter ended May 12, 2024, and later added Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, France and Spain.
