UK Banking Customers Face Transfer and Payment Glitches

U.K. customers of banks and banking apps reported problems with transfers and payments Monday (July 27), according to multiple media reports.

    Among the organizations mentioned in one or more media reports were Barclays, Halifax, HSBC, Monzo, Lloyds and Revolut.

    PYMNTS found at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time that the Barclays service status page said, “Some of our services have issues.” The page showed issues with online banking, while the bank’s other services had no issues.

    “We’re sorry if you’re having issues opening some savings accounts, including ISAs and Bonds, in Online Banking right now,” the Barclays service page said in a Monday update. “You can still do this in the app as normal. We’re working to fix this — thanks for bearing with us.”

    PYMNTS found Monday at 3:50 p.m. EST that the Revolut system status page for the United Kingdom showed one service, transfers, experiencing an issue.

    In a post on X replying to a customer, the Revolut Support account said: “Our dedicated team is actively addressing a service disruption that may be affecting GBP transfers and we’re working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

    GB News reported that Barclays and Lloyds customers said in posts on X that they were having problems with payments and transfers and that in some cases money was not appearing in their accounts.

    Downdetector’s site for the U.K. recorded an increase in reports of issues at both banks, with the issues including fund transfers, the app and online banking, according to the report.

    The report flagged a post on X in which Lloyds replied to a customer and said, “We’re investigating an issue affecting Faster Payments, which may cause delays.”

    While Lloyds replied to individual customers who were having issues, the bank’s service status page showed no scheduled maintenance, according to the report.

    Barclays customers said in posts on X that they were experiencing delays in transfers from other U.K. accounts, per the report.

    Metro reported Monday that together with customers of Barclays and Lloyds, those of Halifax were reporting problems with accessing their accounts and making transfers.

    The Sun also reported Monday that Barclays, Halifax and Lloyds customers were having issues with transferring funds and making payments on the apps.

    A Lloyds spokesperson told the Sun, per the report, “We’re aware some customers are experiencing delays in making faster payments.”

    The report said the reports of issues at the three banks began at midday local time and peaked about two hours later. At the time the report was posted, Downdetector showed 348 reports of issues at Barclays, 269 at Lloyds and 169 at Halifax, per the report.

    The Manchester Evening News reported issues at HSBC and the app-based banks Revolut and Monzo, together with Barclays, Halifax and Lloyds.

    The report flagged a post on X in which Monzo replied to a customer who was having an issue with transfers and said, “We’re aware of an issue that is temporarily causing issues. We’re currently working on a fix to get us back up and running, as soon as possible.”
