This addition enables the users of Hang Seng’s mobile app to make payments via QR code scan at more than 100 million merchants across 55 countries and regions, Ant International said in a Friday (July 24) press release.

Hang Seng Bank said in its own press release that the countries and regions in which the users of its mobile app can now make QR code payments include China, Europe, the United States, Australia, South Korea and Malaysia.

The service supports both “scan to pay” and “show code to pay,” and customers will see the payment amount based on the Alipay+ exchange rate before confirming, according to the release.

“Customers increasingly expect seamless payment solutions when traveling overseas,” Rannie Lee, head of retail banking and wealth at Hang Seng Bank, said in the release. “By partnering with Alipay+, we’re enhancing customer experience by bringing a simple QR payments service within our mobile app — combining broad merchant acceptance with the simplicity of paying and tracking spending in just one place.”

Hang Seng Bank joins an Alipay+ network that includes more than 50 digital wallets and financial institutions, including global bank partners ranging from incumbent banks to fully digital banks, according to Ant International’s press release.

Other banks that have connected their users to the Alipay+ network include Public Bank Berhad in Malaysia, Bank of the Philippine Islands and Asia United Bank in the Philippines, OCBC in Singapore, Kasikorn Bankand Siam Commercial Bank in Thailand, and Vietcombank in Vietnam, per the release.

Venetia Lee, general manager for Greater China at Ant International, said in Hang Seng Bank’s press release that cross-border travel and commerce have led customers to demand seamless payment experiences.

“Alipay+ bridges global users and merchants to make transactions smoother and more accessible,” Lee said. “We are proud to welcome Hang Seng Bank as the first Hong Kong bank to join our network — a testament to the rapid integration of banking apps into the global payment ecosystem.”

The company said the proceeds will help boost its merchant payment, account management and other financial services for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and enterprises around the world.
