New Provider Ranking of Aggregator Apps Deviates in Unforeseen Directions

Uber Eats

A recent PYMNTS study found that 52% of consumers made retail purchases through aggregators last year. What does it mean? Well, we’re pretty sure people like aggregators.

Make that “very” sure. Why else would we publish the Provider Ranking of Aggregators each month? Clearly, we’re on board — as are half of all consumers. Must be something to it.

We went looking for answers in this latest ranking. We found them.

All we’ll say before diving in is this: All is not as it was when last we met in this space.

The Top Five

That previous line may seem a bit over the top when we start out saying that DoorDash is still sitting at No. 1, where it’s been pretty much since we started ranking these platforms.

Similarly, it may seem that we were being melodramatic earlier, if Uber Eats is still at No. 2.

It is.

Likewise, with Deliveroo holding firm at No. 3 for another cycle, you might be wondering what we’re going on about. Here it comes.

Breaking back into the top five on a climb of two chart positions, Instacart takes No. 4. It might have something to do with Kroger announcing 30-minute convenience delivery in partnership with Instacart. Told you something was up. Next time you’ll believe us.

For No. 5, it’s a familiar name, Just Eat, not just giving up that righteous rank.

The Top 10

Dip below the top five and the view changes a bit, as it often does.

At No. 6 this cycle, it’s Grubhub, dropping two chart positions and out of the top five. But while Grubhub has its ups and downs, it’s a certified giant player, so it’s used to such things.

India’s Zomato app is firm at No. 7, just like last month.

Also holding its rank for another cycle is the Glovo app, having just acquired Lola Market in Spain and the Portuguese company Mercadao. Look at ‘em grow.

Still doing fine at No. 9 is Swiggy, another app sensation hailing from India and moving decisively into the grocery sector as of August.

We close on a bit of an upset. Now you know why we were being so intense at the top.

Returning to PYMNTS’ Provider Ranking of Aggregators after a brief absence, it’s the Menulog app hailing from Australia and New Zealand, taking No. 10 to itself this time out.

That’s the ranking in one concise — if somewhat histrionic — go. We get worked up. Sorry.
