Alibaba Wins Telco License, Expands Cloud Services Internationally

China-based eCommerce giant Alibaba has been awarded a license by Chinese telecom regulators to offer mobile telecommunications services in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on December 26.

The announcement comes after years of discussions with the Chinese government over whether private companies would be allowed to compete in China’s telecom sector. In addition to Alibaba, 11 other private companies were awarded licenses.

Alibaba responded to the Journal’s requests for comment, but did not elaborate on the deal. The news follows its December 26 announcement that it would expand its cloud services outside of China.
