Zayo Group Launches Encryption as a Service

Zayo Group Holdings, the cloud infrastructure and communications company, is getting into the encryption market, announcing a new Encryption as a Service product for customers.

The new Encryption as a Service, which uses Ciena’s WaveLogic Encryption solution, gives users wavelength services with 10G wire speed encryption at Layer 1. Zayo has additional higher-speed options in the works. With the new product, customers get a high level of encryption that Zayo says is easy to integrate into a customer’s existing network.

“Data security continues to be one of the top concerns for global industries, an issue that’s been intensified by recent high-profile attacks in health care, retail, banks, hospitality and entertainment,” said Dennis Kyle, senior vice president of strategic marketing and alliances at Zayo. “Our encryption solution is quick and easy to provision and provides high levels of protection without sacrificing network performance. It’s another way we are providing a critical layer of security to protect our customers.”

There’s no question that companies are concerned with protecting their data and that of their customers. One breach can spell the end of a small business and decimate a large one.

In addition to announcing the service on Tuesday (July 19), Zayo said it landed some initial unnamed customers, including a “leading global bank,” which is using the service to encrypt credit card transaction data. That keeps the bank in compliance on the world stage, Zayo said.

Earlier this month, the infrastructure and communications provider landed a $50 million, 20-year dark fiber network contract with an unnamed customer, expanding its service area around the country. Like other big fiber deals Zayo has already won, this one uses both its long-haul fiber network and routes it is already constructing. The customer will use 3,200 route miles of fiber provided by Zayo. It will connect nine markets and will run across eight states.
