The National Retail Federation has called for a new federal cyber law and other steps to stem the tide of retail data breaches.
In a letter distributed to the group’s members, Mallory Duncan, the federation’s senior vice president and general counsel, called for the introduction of both chips and PINs in all U.S. cards, a federal-level data breach notification law and an overarching cyber law to ensure faster law-enforcement response times.
“That is a start, but what we want is a long-term solution, and it is going to require all of us working and investing together to provide one answer,” Duncan wrote. “Retailers will do our part. But we cannot do this alone.”
