New York City is planning a major upgrade to its public-transit payment system, as it reportedly plans to phase out the MetroCard before the end of the decade.
According to Skift.com, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) plans to discontinue the MetroCard by 2019 in favor of a smartphone-based payment system.
In an interview, MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan said that developments in the credit card industry have made it easier for consumers to make the switch.
“We’re expecting the credit card industry to adopt NFC and RFID payments,” he stated. “That’s a broader trend taking place outside of the MTA.”
