JPMorgan Faces Debt Collection Lawsuit From California AG

California attorney general Kamala Harris filed a lawsuit in the state’s Superior Court last week accusing JPMorgan Chase of “committ[ing] debt collection abuse against tens of thousands of California consumers.”

The charges center on actions the global financial services firm took from 2008 to 2011 when it allegedly filed thousands of lawsuits each month.

“At nearly every stage of the collection process, defendants cut corners in the name of speed, cost savings and their own convenience, providing only the thinnest veneer of legitimacy to their lawsuits,” the complaint reads.

Further, the government agency says JPMorgan used questionable documents and incomplete records in its lawsuits, sometimes filing nearly 470 lawsuits in a single day.
