Multinational: Five airlines forced to face consumer price-fixing claims

Five international airlines will reportedly face a lawsuit filed by passengers accusing the companies of fixing air fares on certain routes.

    US District Judge Charles Breyer ruled Tuesday that the case can proceed, but did narrow the suit by ruling that certain routes to Japan and the Philippines were exempt from the charges under law. The case accuses Air New Zealand, Philippine Airlines, Japan-based All Nippon Airways, and Taiwan-based China Airlines of manipulating their prices of trans-Pacific flights.

    Several cases were first filed in 2007, say reports, and were later consolidated. Since the original filings, which initially named 13 airlines, eight have settled for a total of $39.5 million.
