EU: Commission releases flattering 2013 competition report

The European Commission has released its 2013 report on competition policy and its effect on market competition, highlighting results of the year’s most effective policy initiatives.

    According to the Commission, its work in antitrust enforcement, merger control, state aid policy and competition enforcement have preserved and boosted the EU’s competitiveness. The year, the regulator noted, was the 10th anniversary of the adoption of a new competition regulation.

    The Commission proposed last June a “directive to facilitate antitrust damages actions” to complement that ten-year-old regulation. As one of the most prominent highlights of the Commission’s year, the directive would allow victims of cartel abuse to more easily file for damages from the perpetrators.

    Last December, the Commission also adopted new guidelines on merger control to streamline the merger process and unburden companies of unnecessary regulatory burdens.
