Australia: Regs uncover alleged dirty laundry of detergent cartel

Three of the nation’s largest laundry detergent makers are accused of forming a price-fixing cartel as supermarket giant Woolworths stood by the collusion, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

    Colgate-Palmolive, Cussons and Unilever are accused of forming a cartel and Woolworths is accused of knowing about the collusion yet allowing it to happen. According to the ACCC, Unilever was granted immunity from prosecution as it came forward to the authorities with knowledge of the practices.

    The ACCC claims the companies coordinated the move of their higher priced products to supermarkets .

    The cartel is also said to have affected consumers in New Zealand.
