Officials within Kenya have called upon the nation’s Competition Authority to go further in boosting competition in the nation’s economy, say reports.
The National Treasury said Tuesday that the banking, utilities, retail and transport sectors need a boost in competition and could be slowing the economic progress of the nation. Treasury cabinet secretary Henry Rotich is now calling on the regulator to review the sectors and identify legislation that may be blocking competitiveness.
Further, the official said, the Authority will conduct market reviews in the agricultural market to examine product prices.
The remarks come as Consumers Federation of Kenya head Ephraim Kanake slammed the Authority for not doing enough to curb monopolistic behavior in the economy.
